Golfers in the swing for annual charity fundraiser

GOLFERS are set to tee-off this spring for a charity golf day. The Chronicle’s Sunshine Fund is holding its annual golf tournament at Longhirst Hall Golf Club, Morpeth , Northumberland. Golfers new and old are planning to take part. And in a charitable mood, golf shop owner Shaun Cowell is lending golfing newcomer Steve Leven of Newcastle Eagles a set of clubs so he can get some swinging practice in.

Mr Cowell, who owns Shaun Cowell’s Discount Golf Shop, said: “A lady from the shop brought up the idea of lending golf clubs to Steve.
“They basically asked me if I was willing to help out and, as it’s for such a good cause, I agreed.
“It’s all about doing your bit when you can really, and the Sunshine Fund does some great work for children in the North East. I’m actually lending a set of golf clubs to another guy in the competition as well. It’s not much really, just giving them a hand.“I’ve lent them both a whole set of clubs each so they can get some practice in. I admire what they’re doing so I don’t mind lending a helping hand. “I’m a golf pro and I’ve owned the shop for 19 years and I’ve taken part in charity golf events myself, so I know how much fun they can be.”

On arrival at the course, competitors will be given tea or coffee and a bacon sandwich to prepare them for the day. There will also be an opportunity to re-fuel at a half-way house bar with drinks and refreshments, while a two-course meal awaits at the clubhouse when they finish. Prizes will be awarded to the top teams and spot prizes are given in the longest drive and nearest the pin competitions.

The event will take place on Friday May 17, with proceeds going towards the Sunshine Fund , which provides equipment to help improve the lives of children living with disabilities or serious illness.

Sunshine Fund manager, Jo Harris, said: “We are delighted with the massive amount of support we are receiving for the golf event. The money raised will enable us to continue our vital work in improving the life of disabled and seriously ill children in the North East.”
