Drivers to tackle five-day charity walk in Scotland
A DEDICATED team are set to take on a five-day trek for charity . Never afraid of a challenge, bus drivers from Go North East completed Britain’s three biggest peaks last year.
Now the Tyneside team of journeymen is set to tackle the West Highland Way.
Later this month an expedition of 20 will set off from Glasgow on the 95-mile West Scotland route to Fort William.
And for the five days of walking, the charity cash campaigners are hoping to top their target of £5,000 for the Chronicle’s Sunshine Fund.
To make sure their stamina is up to scratch, the Go North East walkers have been upping their Sunday afternoon strolls to the 20-mile mark.
Just weeks after getting out of hospital following an asthma attack, bus driver and organiser Yvonne Greenwood is ready for the challenge.
The 40-year-old mum-of-two said: “We did the three peaks last year and it was a real challenge. The majority of us are staying in hostels, but there’s also camping.
“We’ve been going out every Sunday to places like Hadrian’s Wall. Our team moral is great and we spur each other on.
“It definitely never gets too difficult because you always remember why you’re on the walk in the first place.
“The Sunshine Fund is such a good charity . Anything that helps sick and vulnerable children deserves as much help as we can give it. We’re also raising money for the North East Air Ambulance.
“Everyone has been so supportive. We’re really grateful to Morrisons, who have donated crates of water.”
Sunshine Fund manager Jo Harris said: “We’re delighted the team from Go North East are taking on another challenge.
“They did a fantastic job with their three peaks challenge last year. I’m sure they’ll show the same determination when they head up to Scotland.
“We’re always so happy when people are kind enough to support us because it means we can do so much for vulnerable children.”
Anyone who would like more information or who would like to make a donation is asked to call Jo Harris on (0191) 201 6289 or log on to the fund’s website, www.eveningchroniclesunshinefund.org.uk
