North stars are good sports for charity

15 November 2007

Sports stars from the North East spread a little sunshine at the 12th annual Celebrity Question of Sport night. Newcastle players Peter Ramage and Steve Harper were joined by former boxer Billy Hardy and Paralympian champ Steven Miller and more at the event held last night in aid of the Sunshine Fund. The stars gave up their time to take part in a Celebrity Question of Sport, similar to the long-running TV quiz.

Compere for the evening was former Bayern Munich, Celtic and Aston Villa player Alan McInally, who has been hosting similar events for the past 17 years.
Companies from across the North East paid to enter a table, with stars sitting with teams. Their sporting brains were then tested over six rounds, each with a prize and a wooden spoon. This was followed by a raffle and auction of sporting memorabilia.

The winning team was Stories: SSP, with Royal Bank of Scotland second. The Chronicle team came fourth. By the end of the evening more than £30,000 had been raised.

Sunshine Fund manager Jo Harris said: “Everyone had a brilliant night. It was a great way for everyone to enjoy themselves and raise some money.”

The evening, held at the Marriott Gosforth Park hotel, Gosforth, Newcastle, started with a sparkling wine reception before the questions began.
During the night, Newcastle player Peter Ramage said: “I came here last year as well and I didn’t do too badly, I got a few questions right.
“It’s a really enjoyable night and it’s for a good cause. So hopefully everybody will have a good time and the charity does better.”
Team mate Steve Harper added: “I’ve been here four or five times and I won it once. I’ve struggled after that though.
“It’s a very competitive night, you always celebrate if you win a round.” But former boxer Billy Hardy had a trick up his sleeve. He said: “I’ve been playing Cluedo before I came and I won £20. So it should be interesting.”

The Sunshine Fund pays for equipment which significantly improves the quality of life of disabled and seriously ill children in our region, but which they would otherwise have to do without because of funding restrictions. For details, call Jo Harris on (0191) 201 6289.
