Cheap thrills at race

14 August 2007

This is the car that is taking on the rest of Europe in a challenge race for older motors.

Beginning in Nottingham later this month, Mike Fenwick, of County Durham, will get into his 1991 BMW 525 Sport to travel across Europe to Nürburgring in the Scumball Rally.

Thousands of people from across the country are taking part in the race – which must be completed in a car worth less than £1,000.

Butcher Mr Fenwick, who will be driving with friend Stuart Miller to raise money for the Chronicle’s Sunshine Fund, said he was looking forward to the race and trying to make more money for charity than any other team.

He said: “We’ve got around £4,000. I don’t know what the other teams have raised, but the most last year was £3,000.”
