Spreading A Little Extra Sunshine

Runners make a real difference

Hundreds of fitness fanatics and fun runners pounded the streets of Tyneside to raise charity cash. More than 300 people pulled on their trainers, shorts and t-shirts to take part in the Chronicle’s annual Sunshine Run.

The 5km run saw people cover a route along the Newcastle Quayside starting at the Millennium Bridge and heading along to just beyond the Copthorne Hotel before doubling back on themselves and crossing the river to finish in Baltic Square.

The run raises thousands of pounds for the charity which helps to improve the lives of disabled children living in the region.

Among those taking part was fun runner Tracey Anderson who sported the coveted number 1 race number.

The 44-year-old contact centre manager from Dunston, Gateshead, said: “I was a bit surprised when I got my number and saw I was number 1.

“There was never any chance of me being first over the line though. I like to do a 5km run each year and I alternate each year between charities. This is the third time I have done it for the Sunshine Fund. I like to support it because it is a local charity and you know that money stays in the North East.”

Entertainment was provided before and after the run by two different steel bands. A warm-up session was also held by Laura and David Venus of Whickham-based Evolutionary Fitness.

On hand to compère the event was DJ Wayne Allen. He said: “Having lived in the North East for 15 years I have always been aware of the great work that the Sunshine Fund carries out and to be asked to be part of the event to get the crowds motivated is an honour.

“I love mentioning people as they run past. The event is really good natured and everyone who has taken part has really seemed to have enjoyed themselves.”

First over the line was Steven Medd, 32, from Houghton-le-Spring. He said: “It was a really enjoyable run. It’s the first race I have won since I was at school. I came sixth last year so this is a big surprise.

“I read the Chronicle regularly and it’s nice to see stories showing where the money everyone raises goes to and how it can make a difference to people.”

Martin Soloman, chairman of the Sunshine Fund, took part. He said: “I have done a few of the other Sunshine Runs and I think it is a great event.

“Every year I’m really impressed by the people who come out to take part and do their bit for what is a local charity.”
