Fans bringing a ray of sunshine

24 August 2009

CELTIC fans from Tyneside are planning a sponsored walk to their favourite club’s ground to raise cash for three charities.

The gang of seven will hike from Tyneside Irish Club to the Celtic football ground from September 5 to raise cash for the Evening Chronicle’s Sunshine Fund, the National Association for Colitis and Crohn’s disease and the Tommy Burn Skin Cancer Trust.

Organiser Iain McGovern said: “We wanted to do something for charity that coincided with a home game at Celtic. “Not many people now realise that Celtic Football Club was set up by an Irish priest as a charitable body to raise cash for the homeless and poverty-stricken in Glasgow. “So this is a fitting way to raise cash for those today who have been struck down with serious diseases or conditions.

We are looking for people who would be willing to join us for the first day and help us raise cash. We are due to arrive at the Celtic ground on September 12 in time for the team’s home game against Dundee United.
“When we get there the club has promised to give us a 25% donation of all the money we have raised.”
