Runners urged to don silly costumes for charity event
TYNESIDE students are urging fun runners to pull on their trainers and dig out colourful costumes in a bid to raise cash for charity. Northumbria University student Darryl Harland will don a Captain America outfit when he takes part in the fancy dress fun run next month.
And along with fellow sports management student Craig Buchanan, 21, from Gateshead, he is hoping others will sport silly costumes for their charity race.
The pair, who are staging the event with seven other students, are aiming to raise more than £300 for the Chronicle’s Sunshine Fund. Darryl, 22, who lives in Heaton, Newcastle, today called on people to take part in the event in Exhibition Park, Gateshead. He said: “As part of the final year of our degree we have to put on a sporting event and we are hoping to donate all the proceeds to the Sunshine Fund.
“This has turned in to an annual event, where other students have done it in the past, but we are hoping to surpass what they did and make more money. “It’s a good charity and we want to raise as much money as we can. “It’s a bit of fun too really. We want families to come along but we’ve also targeted students.
“We want as many strange outfits as possible. There is no particular theme, people can wear whatever they want as long as they come to the event.”
So far nearly 100 people have signed up to take part in the 2km run which is being held at 11am on Sunday, April 26.But it is hoped 250 fundraisers will turn up on the day, with a Beat the Keeper stall available where prizes can be won.
Sunshine Fund manager Jo Harris said: “We’re extremely grateful for the support. "We will use all the money raised to help provide more life-changing equipment for sick and disabled children in the region. “It’s thanks to these generous supporters we are able to continue helping as many families across the region as we do.”
People can enter on the day from 9am and those who have chosen to register beforehand must be at the park by 10.30am.
Tickets are £8 per adult, £5 for children, students and pensioners, but a family ticket is also available, with two adults and two children taking part for just £20.
Entrants must not enter by post after April 17. For more information or to get an entry form e-mail smarteventmanagement@live.com
